Cignal secures outright semis seat in PBA D-League
MANILA, Philippines – Cignal HD booked the last outright semifinals seat in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup after a 96-89 triumph over Centro Escolar University (CEU) on Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Jason Perkins had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists to help the Hawkeyes win their sixth straight game. Cignal improved to 8-2, good for the second seed in the league standings.
Perkins sparked a 10-0 Cignal run late in the third quarter, which turned a 60-59 deficit to a 69-60 advantage. The Hawkeyes then fended off the Scorpions' repeated rallies in the final quarter.
"I guess we were fortunate, because we had a very long preparation," said deputy coach Jude Roque, who called the shots while head coach Boyet Fernandez was with San Beda College in the NCAA Season 93 tournament.
"We had a lot of time in scouting them, but it was still a struggle against them," he added. "But the boys delivered and got the win."
"Coach Boyet was still on top of everything and I just carried on whatever game plan he had for the team. I have to give credit to coach Boyet because it was him who prepared the players."
