Vandeweghe cashes in on Konta upset, advances in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Great Britain - CoCo Vandeweghe scored her first big win since pairing up with new coach and 1987 Wimbledon winner Pat Cash, shocking hometown favorite and No.4 seed Johanna Konta, 6-1, 6-3, to complete the quarterfinal line-up at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.
"He finally showed up," Vandeweghe joked during her on-court interview. "He’s been working his commentating job in Queens. I had to get him down for the ladies down here. He'll be with me through the US Open, we’re going to try and see how it goes."
Vandeweghe and Cash announced the partnership at the start of the grass court season, and the results already seem to be paying off as the American earned her first Top 10 win since the Australian Open, where she reached the semifinals.
"He better work me hard and bring out that headband," she said of her coach's signature fashion statement. "Maybe I’ll get one of my own!"
Joking after the match, Vandeweghe was all business during her encounter with Konta, racing through the opening set and steeling through a tense start to the second set before pulling away for the win after 65 minutes on court.
"I came out playing solid, and was ready to go from the start. That’s what you want from a match, to be firing and moving well right away. That’s how I felt today."
In all, she struck four aces and 20 winners, making just 10 unforced errors in two sets and making it through the match without facing a break point.
"I was just trying to make her earn every service game, that was my focus. I wanted to keep making her play and it finally started to wear on her in the second set. To get the break, even a let cord and help you every once a while. It’s better to be lucky than good sometimes.
"I was happy with how I competed; I think that’s the most important thing, competing hard for two out of three sets.
Awaiting Vandeweghe in the quarterfinals is 2015 Wimbledon runner-up Garbiñe Muguruza, who was equally efficient against Alison Riske earlier in the day.
