SMB's Rhodes raring to play in breakthrough Finals

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel's usually ferocious import Charles Rhodes could not help but be overcome with emotion as the clock wound down on the Beermen's Game 4 victory over the Star Hotshots last Friday.

The 109-102 win over the Hotshots gave the Beermen a 3-1 win in the best-of-five semifinals series in the PBA Commissioner's Cup. For the San Miguel locals, it was their second straight Finals appearance this season, and fifth since Leo Austria took over as head coach.

For Rhodes, however, it was only the first time that he had ever made the Finals in his professional basketball career.

"Man, it's overwhelming," said Rhodes, who bent over and clutched his knees with 14 seconds left, as San Miguel went up, 105-100.

"I just want to thank God for blessing me. This is my first Finals that I've ever been in my whole career, so it really means a lot to me," he explained.

Rhodes admits that he very nearly cried right there on the court, as he was so caught up in the moment and the knowledge that he will finally get to play for a title.
