JRU locks down Adamson to claim FilOil semis seat

MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal University (JRU) used a superb defensive effort in the first half to take down Adamson University, 67-56, and advance to the semifinals of the 2017 FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup on Wednesday in San Juan.

The Heavy Bombers led, 23-11, at the end of the opening quarter, and limited the usually explosive Soaring Falcons to only 28% shooting in the first half. Adamson made only nine field goals in the first two quarters, four of which were from Papi Sarr.

JRU was still in control, 53-38, at the end of the third quarter but Adamson found its rhythm early in the fourth, with Sarr scoring inside the paint while Jerrick Ahanmisi sniped from the perimeter.

A transition lay-up by Sarr made it a five-point game, 54-59, with still 2:20 left to play, but Tey Teodoro drilled a booming triple with two minutes left to make it 62-54 once more and quell the Soaring Falcons' rally.

"It is our defense that carried us the whole game," JRU coach Vergel Meneses said after the contest.

Teodoro finished the game with 23 points and five rebounds, while Ervin Grospe added 16 points and eight boards. Abdel Poutouochi had 15 rebounds.
