Daquis withdraws from PH volleyball team bound for SEA Games, top Asian tilt

Rachel Anne Daquis has decided not to join the national team that will play next month in the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship and the Southeast Asian Games.

Daquis will undergo a "specialized training course" in the hopes of becoming a fitness ambassador. Her training begins on August 7, which runs simultaneously with the Asian championship on August 9 to 17 and the SEA Games on August 19 to 31.

“I am very grateful you have considered me to be included in the team lineup, but I feel that there are other more capable candidates that can contribute more effectively to the team given the other priorities in my life that I must consider,” Daquis told Volleyverse.com, emphasizing that she only needs to finish the course before entertaining plans of playing again for the national team.

Peter Cayco, acting president of Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc., said the team will miss Daquis' "(veteran) presence." The women's side will depart for Japan on July 17 to begin an extensive, 13-day training in preparation for the aforementioned competitions.

"We still have a lot of international tournaments ahead and we’re very optimistic that she would join us," Cayco said. "For now, we want to thank her for being part of our preparation and we’re wishing the best of luck in her endeavor.”

Kim Dy will replace Daquis.
