CBA all-time scoring leader Zhu Fangyu retires
The Chinese Basketball Association’s (CBA) all-time scoring leader Zhu Fangyu announced his retirement on social media on Sunday.
“It is a tough decision that will arrive sooner or later. My career as a basketball player ends today,” Zhu wrote on his Weibo account, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter.
During his 18 full CBA seasons in Guangdong Southern Tigers, the 34-year-old basketball star scored 11,287 points in total. On November 26, 2014, Zhu scored 34 points in a game with Liaoning Flying Leopards, making him the first and only CBA player to score more than 10,000 points.
Zhu was also the CBA all-time three-pointer leader with 1,621 three pointers, far higher than the second-placed Lester Hudson of Liaoning Flying Leopards (1,264 three pointers).
Spending his entire career representing Guangdong Southern Tigers, Zhu has won eight CBA titles alongside two Most Valuable Players and four Final Most Valuable Players awards.
As a Chinese basketball international, Zhu helped China enter the final eight of the 2004 and 2008 Olympics Games. Meanwhile, he also won three titles in Asian Men's Basketball Championship and two Asian Games championship.
