UP escapes UE's upset axe with 5-set win
MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines (UP) wasted a two-set cushion but recovered in the deciding frame to repulse University of the East (UE), 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8, in their first game of the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball tournament on Sunday.
After cruising to a 2-0 advantage, the Lady Maroons fell apart in the third and fourth frames, unable to deal with the Lady Warriors' heavy serves and committing too many unforced errors.
Fortunately for UP, they managed to recover in the fifth set, with third-year stars Isa Molde and Tots Carlos conspiring to lead the Lady Maroons to the hard-fought win and ensure that new coach Godfrey Okumu would have a triumphant debut.
"It's just another day in the office," said Okumu. "You expect to win 3-0, but we won 3-2. It's still a good start, and I'm proud of them."
Carlos topscored for UP with 22 points on 20 kills, while Molde finished with 20 points on 16 kills and three aces. Justine Dorog also contributed 11 points for the Lady Maroons.
