Tough game against UST of no surprise to La Salle

MANILA – De La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus was not entirely surprised to see the Lady Spikers struggle to put away the gritty University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in their first game of UAAP Season 80.

The defending champions opened their bid for a third straight crown on a winning note, but not before being dragged into a five-setter by the Cherry Rondina-powered Tigresses. La Salle managed to seize a 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8 win.

"Talagang expected namin na hindi ganoon kadaling talunin ang UST," De Jesus admitted after their triumph. "Kahit sa Uni Games, medyo nahirapan 'yung team namin."

There were several factors working against La Salle; for one, Kianna Dy was playing on a hyperextended left knee that limited her playing time. Moreover, it marked the first time that setter Michelle Cobb started a game, taking over the position long held by the iconic Kim Fajardo.

"May mga adjustment pang gagawin, kasi last minute, mahirap magpalit ng tao, lalo na kung 'yung starter mo, hindi makakalaro," de Jesus said, referring to Dy.

Dy, who still managed nine points despite being subbed in and out of the game, also acknowledged that Rondina's presence made UST a tough assignment, even though the Tigresses were playing without the injured EJ Laure.
