NU grabs opening-day win against Adamson
MANILA, Philippines – National University recovered from a third set meltdown to take down Adamson University, 25-15, 25-23, 16-25, 25-13, and open its campaign in the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball tournament on a winning note on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.
In the first game of her final season, Jaja Santiago tallied 16 points on 11 attacks, four kill blocks, and one ace. Aiko Urdas and Audrey Paran each had nine points, while Jasmin Nabor finished with 22 excellent sets.
"Maganda 'yung pinakita ng team namin, pero alam kong kulang pa at marami pa kaming kailangang trabahuhin ni Coach Babes (Castillo)," said Santiago. "Noong last set namin, nakikita ko na bumabagal kami, imbis na bumibilis."
The Lady Bulldogs won the opening set handily as Adamson gifted them with 10 free points, but they had to rally from an 18-22 deficit in the second frame.
Back-to-back aces by Risa Sato sparked NU's fiery wind-up in the closing stretch, as the Lady Bulldogs won seven of the last eight points to seize a 2-0 advantage.
They collapsed completely in the third set, however. NU gave up four aces in the frame, and managed only six attacks as the Lady Falcons extended the match.
