Wozniacki rushes past Rybarikova in Melbourne
MELBOURNE, Australia - No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki was nearly untouchable in her straight sets win against the tricky Magdalena Rybarikova, comfortably advancing to the Australian Open quarterfinals.
After having to save match points against Jana Fett in the second round, Wozniacki kept things relatively drama-free today on Rod Laver Arena needing just over an hour to record the 6-3, 6-0 win.
“[Rybarikova] is a really tricky opponent,” Wozniacki admitted in her on-court interview. “She mixes up the pace, and especially at the beginning I didn’t expect some of her forehands down the line off of some of my - I thought - good shots.
“After that, I kind of just calmed down and tried to get some returns into play - because she was serving big - and then waited for my opportunity to attack.”
Rybarikova came out firing against Wozniacki, throwing in slices and rushing the net on short balls to disrupt the Dane’s rhythm. She was rewarded early on with the first break of the match, but that would be about as much as damage as she would be able to do against Wozniacki.
Though she’s usually known for her consistency and retrieving at the back of the court, Wozniacki played aggressive to keep Rybarikova on the back foot, breaking straight back. Wozniacki reeled off the next nine of ten games to neatly put away the contest after just 64 minutes on court.
The Dane blasted 25 winners - ten more than her opponent - and created nine chances to break, converting five times. Wozniacki only hit six unforced errors to round off the commanding performance.
Through to the quarterfinals here for the third time - and her tenth career Grand Slam quarterfinal overall - Wozniacki will face fellow comeback kid Carla Suarez Navarro for a spot in the semifinals.
“I’ve played [Suarez Navarro] so many times before,” she said. “We’ve had marathons, we’ve had a little bit of everything. She’s an amazing player and a great person. We’re going to have fun out there.”
