Viral illness causes Kvitova to withdraw from Brisbane
BRISBANE, Australia - Petra Kvitova was forced to withdraw from the Brisbane International on Monday after a viral illness left her unable to take the court against Estonian youngster Anett Kontaveit.
"I’m really disappointed to withdraw from the Brisbane International," Kvitova said. "Unfortunately I picked up a virus on the flight to Australia and I haven’t been able to get healthy in time to play here. It's always a fantastic and competitive place to start the year so I’m sorry not to be in the draw.”
The former WTA World No.2 made a triumphant return from a traumatic hand injury last spring, winning the Aegon Classic in Birmingham and reaching the semifinals of the China Open at year's end.
She finished the year ranked No.29, and had no points to defend for the first five months of 2018.
Kvitova will be replaced in the draw by lucky loser, Heather Watson.
