Sweeping statement as Arellano routs Beda, to seal semis seat

What was expected to be a tough battle between two unbeaten teams and title contenders turned into a one-sided affair as the defending champion Arellano University pounded San Beda College into submission, 25-17, 25-10, 25-17, Friday to clinch a semifinals spot in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Chiefs claimed their seventh straight victory in as many outings to advance to their sixth straight Final 4 appearance. Arellano also extended its winning streak to 19 overall since last season.

Graduating player Jovielyn Prado and Regine Arocha wreaked havoc on the Lady Red Spikers’ defense, sending missiles from different angles to bring down San Beda, which dropped its first match this season after a 6-0 start.

Prado hammered 13 kills and nailed 4 service aces to finish with 17 points spiked with 9 excellent receptions.

Arocha had 11 markers she coupled with a good defensive effort, posting 12 digs for the Legarda-based squad, which is two wins away from booking an outright berth in the best-of-3 finals.

Arellano’s last two assignments are against College of St. Benilde on Monday and San Sebastian College next Thursday.
