Siniakova sinks Vekic in St Petersburg opener
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Katerina Siniakova got off to a strong start after winning her first round match against Donna Vekic at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, grinding through in three sets to advance 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Siniakova trailed by a break in both of the first two sets, needing to find her way past the tenacious Vekic, who created 11 break opportunities but only converted four times. The Czech served 10 aces across the three sets to get back on track and edged through after claiming the lone break in the third set, closing out the match after two hours on court.
Siniakova will play the winner of an all-Russian powerhouse matchup between No.6 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Ekaterina Makarova.
Also in action, Russian wildcard Anastasia Potapova made St. Petersburg history with her straight sets victory over Tatijana Maria, 6-2, 6-4, her career-first main draw win. She’s already the youngest player in the main draw and, at 16 years old, Potapova became the youngest to win a main draw match - beating the record 18-year-old Daria Kasatkina set in 2016.
Up next, No.1 seed and Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki awaits Potapova in the second round.
Also joining them in the second round, Alize Cornet also advanced after her 6-3, 7-5 win over Mona Barthel.
The St. Petersburg qualifying rounds wrapped up today, with Roberta Vinci, Viktoria Kuzmova, Tereza Martincova and Elena Rybakina all earning main draw berths. Vinci took down qualifying No.8 seed Andrea Petkovic after a three sets battle for a spot in the main draw, advancing 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 after two hours. Kuzmova saw off qualifying No.2 seed Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-2, 7-5, Martincova notched a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 win over Vera Lapko and Rybakina dismissed Deborah Chiesa 6-1, 6-3.
