San Sebastian opens post-Soltones era by beating EAC
MANILA, Philippines – Four players finished in double-digits as the San Sebastian College pummeled Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), 25-16, 25-19, 25-16, to open its campaign in the NCAA Season 93 women's volleyball tournament on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
In their first NCAA game without three-time MVP Grethcel Soltones, the Lady Stags leaned on a balanced effort to thoroughly outgun the Lady Generals in their first game of the season.
Daurene Santos, Nikka Dalisay, Dangie Encarnacion, and new team captain Joyce Sta. Rita each scored 13 points as San Sebastian tallied 44 attacks against only 17 for EAC.
"Sinasabi ko lagi sa kanila na wala na si Gretchel, so siguro naman kaya na nilang tumayo sa sarili nilang mga paa," said San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb, referring to the powerful open spiker who led the Lady Stags to the NCAA Finals in the past two seasons.
San Sebastian's performance against EAC was a complete contrast to how they played in previous years. Before, the Lady Stags often relied solely on Soltones, who carried the offensive burden for their team. This time around, however, setter Vira Guillema made use of virtually every spiker in their squad.
