Revenge? Nabong tallies double-double against former team Meralco
MANILA, Philippines – Kelly Nabong set the tone for GlobalPort in their PBA Philippine Cup game against the Meralco Bolts on Sunday, as the burly big man came through with eight points and five rebounds in the opening quarter.
He made two of his three three-pointers, helping the Batang Pier surge to a 29-16 lead. He nearly had a double-double at the half with 12 points and nine rebounds and he finished with 17 points and 17 boards in a 107-88 triumph.
That his best game of the conference came against his former team is sure to raise eyebrows.
Nabong's stint in Meralco came to an abrupt, inelegant end last season, when he was indefinitely suspended by the Bolts after getting into a heated argument with former assistant coach Jimmy Alapag during a playoff game. Meralco released him at the end of the PBA Governors' Cup, and GlobalPort signed him as a free agent.
Nabong insists that revenge was not on his mind, however, as he took on his former teammates at the Big Dome.
"It was just like any other game. It's nothing, really, it's nothing. (But) it feels good to win against them, I know that much," he acknowledged.
