Rene Catalan hopes to start PH’s ONE campaign on winning note
Rene Catalan wants to score a first victory for the Philippines when he squares off with China’s Peng Xue Wen in a 3-round strawweight tussle at ONE: Kings of Courage at Jakarta Convention Center in Indonesia on January 20.
The decorated wushu practitioner seeks to continue his winning ways that started last year.
Catalan started 2017 on a high note by submitting Indonesian prospect Adrian Matheis via second-round armbar in January before routing China’s Bu Huo You Ga by way of unanimous decision seven months later.
As the lone Filipino representative in ONE Championship’s first event of 2018, Catalan seeks to tally the country’s first win in Asia’s premier MMA competition this year.
For Catalan, his first trip to the ONE Championship cage this year will be another step toward his goal: a world title shot.
“My goal is to compete for the ONE strawweight world championship. I know before I get to that stage, I still have a lot of work ahead of me,” he said.
