No pressure for Kai Sotto after inclusion in '23 for 23' pool

MANILA, Philippines – Few people were surprised when Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes named teenager Kai Sotto to his "23 for 23," the initial pool of players who can play for the country in 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

After all, the 15-year-old Sotto already stands at 7-feet tall, and has some experience in playing for the country as a member of the Batang Gilas team that dominated the 2017 SEABA Under-16 Championship in Manila last year.

Currently, he is shining for the unbeaten Ateneo Blue Eaglets in the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament, and is the league's leading shot-blocker.

For the teenager, his inclusion into the pool – a group that includes collegiate stars like Thirdy Ravena, CJ Perez, and Robert Bolick – is an honor.

"Siyempre, thankful ako na makakasama ako doon, at maasahan niyo na pagta-trabahuhan ko talaga 'yung role na 'yun sa team," said Sotto, who attended Sunday's PBA game between NLEX and Phoenix at the Araneta Coliseum.
