Mono Vampire Clings on to Win, Survives Hot Shooting Rally by Dragons
Bucking the disqualification of their prolific World Import Mike Singletary in the fourth quarter, Jason Brickman stepped up for Mono Vampire as he scored 4 of their last 6 points in the game to hold on to a 115-111 victory, Friday night at Stadium 29.
Leading by as much as 19 points in the third quarter thanks to their amazing offensive arsenal, Mono Vampire looked like it would cruise to an easy victory over the Dragons. A basket from Sam Deguera gave the Thailand-based squad an 83-64 lead with only 4:36 left in the penultimate period. However, the Dragons suddenly caught fire as they finished the third on a 22 to 5 run as they were only down by 2 points, 88-86, heading into the fourth.
The two teams engaged in a firefight in the fourth quarter as Marcus Marshall and Joshua Munzon led the fight for Westports Malaysia and Singletary and Zamar did the same for Mono Vampire.
With 3:44 left in the ball game it looked like the momentum would turn in favor of the visiting Dragons as Singletary committed his fifth and final foul, giving AJ West two free throws and a chance to tie the game. But West would waste this opportunity as he missed both free throws.
Brickman and Teerawat Chantachon scored key baskets for Mono Vampire that stretched their lead to 7, 113-106, but the Dragons had one last run in them. Westports Malaysia started their work on defense as they forced two straight turnovers from Brickman leading to two free throws and a triple from Munzon.
Down 113-111, the Dragons got another steal off of Zamar this time and gave themselves a shot at tying the score of grabbing the lead with a triple. However, Munzon rushed a corner three-point shot that only hit the side of the backboard giving Brickman the chance to ice the game from the free throw line.
Singletary led the scoring for Mono Vampire with 27 points in his return to Thailand. Zamar added 24 points and 7 rebounds while Deguera chipped in 21 points and 15 rebounds.
For the third time this season, Brickman notched another double-double with 11 points and 13 assists.
On the other end, Marshall scorched hot once again with 38 points after scattering 60 during his last trip to Bangkok. Munzon and West added 32 and 24 points respectively but the Dragons only got 17 points from their locals and nothing from their other import Patrick Cabahug who was not even able to attempt a shot in less than 6 minutes on the floor.
