Koy Banal downplays Marinerong Pilipino's opening-day win
MANILA, Philippines – Marinerong Pilipino coach Koy Banal is not putting too much stock in their opening day win over Zark's Burger-Lyceum in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup.
This, even as the Skippers showed off their depth and poise in building a huge lead in the third quarter, then holding on in crunch time amid a rally by the Jawbreakers.
Five players scored in double-digits as the Skippers secured a 94-92 victory on Thursday at Ynares Sports Arena.
"Well, it means nothing," Banal said of the victory. "We need to keep working. We need to get better, because everybody is going to prepare for us."
Marinerong Pilipino was tabbed as a contender ahead of the conference thanks to its deep roster, which includes rookies Alvin Pasaol, Vince Tolentino and Abu Tratter. As it turned out, Banal barely needed to use his talented rookies as his veterans zoomed to a double-digit lead at the half.
