Guiao cites offensive rebounds for NLEX's loss
MANILA, Philippines – Their inability to finish defensive possessions proved costly for the NLEX Road Warriors on Sunday, as they suffered their first loss of the PBA Philippine Cup at the hands of the Phoenix Fuel Masters.
NLEX shot a respectable 45% from the field, and limited Phoenix to 39% shooting. However, the Fuel Masters hacked out a 102-95 victory, thanks in part to their hard work on the offensive glass.
Phoenix came up with 19 offensive rebounds, nine more than NLEX. That led to extra possessions that the Fuel Masters translated to 22-second chance points. At the end of the game, Phoenix had attempted a whopping 104 field goals to NLEX's 85.
"'Yung offensive rebounding nila, na-convert nila to a 13-point advantage," Guiao pointed out after the game.
"Those four missed free throws (by Juami Tiongson and Kiefer Ravena) while we were putting up a rally, plus nine offensive rebounds (by Phoenix), I think that really cost us the game," he said.
