Gilas coaches eye daily practices as Australia game looms
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine men's national basketball team is expected to begin holding daily practices in early February, as their crucial game against Australia in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers draws closer.
Gilas Pilipinas is tied with Australia at the top of the standings in Group B, with both teams having won their first two games of the qualifiers.
Australia, however, takes the top spot by virtue of point differential. They won their first two assignments by an average margin of 31 points, while the Philippines labored to victories over Japan on the road and Chinese Taipei at home.
So far, the national team has had two practices, but assistant coach Jong Uichico is hopeful that by February 5, they can begin holding daily training sessions.
"Dapat naman by February 5, nage-every day na kami," said Uichico, who took charge of practice last Monday together with Josh Reyes, as head coach Chot Reyes was on vacation.
