Favored Lady Chiefs can't relax, warns Arellano coach
MANILA, Philippines – Defending NCAA women's volleyball champion Arellano University showed why it is considered the favorite to repeat as titlists in Season 93, as the Lady Chiefs steamrolled Mapua University on Thursday.
Reigning Finals MVP Jovielyn Prado barely broke a sweat while Regine Arocha came up with 13 points, as the Lady Chiefs crushed the Lady Cardinals, 25-10, 25-17, 25-13, to open their title-retention campaign.
"Siguro nakuha namin talaga sa practice," Arellano coach Obet Javier said after his team completed the easy victory.
The Lady Chiefs' run to the NCAA Season 92 title was somewhat unexpected, and their victory in the finals can be considered an upset. Arellano was up against an unbeaten San Sebastian College team that was armed with a thrice-to-beat advantage and bannered by three-time MVP Grethcel Soltones.
But with Prado and Arocha coming up with big performances, they defeated the Lady Stags three straight times to secure a second title in three seasons.
