Arellano cruises past Mapua to kick off title defense
MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University's bid for back-to-back NCAA women's volleyball crowns got off to a triumphant start as the Lady Chiefs demolished the Mapua University Lady Cardinals in straight sets on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
With Regine Arocha and setter Sarah Verutiao leading the way, the Lady Chiefs rolled to a comfortable 25-10, 25-17, 25-13 victory over the Lady Cardinals.
Arocha scored a team-high 12 points, while Verutiao had 28 excellent sets as she started in the place of usual playmaker Rhea Ramirez.
"Sabi ko sa mga players ko, dapat one game at a time muna," said Arellano coach Obet Javier, whose team pulled off an upset of San Sebastian College in the NCAA Season 92 finals to claim their second crown in three years.
"Pinilit namin na maging maganda ang resulta sa game namin sa Mapua, para makita namin 'yung resulta ng practice," he added.
