Tams seek last semis berth against Bulldogs

MANILA, Philippines — As top-flight team Ateneo looks to move closer to a sweep, the three squads scrambling for the remaining Final Four seat seek to boost their respective drives in an all-important UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball playdate today at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Fourth-running Far Eastern (6-6) trains its sights on the Final Four with a win against semis-chasing No. 6 National U (4-8) in the 2 p.m. tussle while No. 5 University of the Philippines (5-7) faces the tough task of posting an upset against the 12-0 Blue Eagles at 4 p.m. in order to stay alive.

The Tams can get a hassle-free entry into the next round if they beat the Bulldogs in the first game, and then the pursuing Maroons go on to lose to their spotless neighbors from Katipunan in the second match.

FEU got prime position in the three-way race by virtue of its 79-63 demolition of University of the East coupled by UP’s 70-86 setback to No. 3 semis qualifier Adamson last Sunday.

“That was a good confidence-booster for us going to the homestretch,” said FEU’s first-year coach Olsen Racela. “Hopefully we can carry the momentum over to Wednesday’s game (versus NU).”
