Short trips Indian GM, cops crown

MANILA, Philippines — GM Nigel Short trounced Indian GM Srinath Narayanan in the final round to capture the Piaya Network Negros International chess crown at the Ikthus Osborn Hall in Bacolod City yesterday.

Short thus closed out the 9-round Swiss system tournament with four straight wins and finished with an eight-point total for a one-point victory worth $3,000 and a glass trophy from Piaya Network’s businessman owner Tony Aguirre.

The Englishman also had two draws, the last against fellow GM Joey Antonio in the fifth round.

“I am very delighted that I was able to hold my nerves in the end,” said Short.

Against Narayanan in a Guioco Piano game, Short pounced on his rival’s dubious moves in the middle game then kept the initiative on his way to posting the 53-move win.
