Pons fills in leadership void for FEU

MANILA, Philippines – "And'yan si Pons, kaya kami nanalo."

This was how Far Eastern University coach George Pascua opened his post-game presser, moments after the Lady Tamaraws turned back Adamson University, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-18, in the do-or-die Game 3 of their PVL Collegiate Conference semifinals series.

Pascua was only partly jesting. Bernadeth Pons, FEU's team captain, missed the Lady Tamaraws' past four games to focus on their campaign in the UAAP Season 80 beach volleyball tournament, but proved to be the game-changer in the deciding game.

With the Lady Tamaraws in a do-or-die situation in the PVL, Pascua and FEU management came to an agreement to field in their star open hitter. Pons, as she has done throughout her FEU career, delivered in spectacular fashion.

Coming off the bench in the first set, Pons went on to score 15 points on 12 attacks, while adding 14 digs and 11 excellent receptions. The first two games of the best-of-3 series between FEU and Adamson went to five sets; with Pons in the game, the Lady Tamaraws secured the deciding win in four.
