Meralco completes sweep of Star, returns to Governors' Cup final
Allen Durham scored 24 points, and Meralco's defense rendered Star without a point for a 6-minute stretch across the fourth quarter and overtime as the Bolts defeated Star 91-88 in the PBA Governors' Cup semifinals at Araneta Coliseum on Thursday.
Meralco completed a sweep of its best-of-5 series, but coach Norman Black and his crew needed overtime to finish off handicapped but resilient Star.
"We went through a brick wall to win this basketball game, they tried to extend the series. That's what happened tonight," Black said.
"In the end, it was all worth it because we get to move on to the championship."
Despite the absence of injured Paul Lee and the continued struggles of Kris Acox, Star erased a 13-point deficit and engaged Meralco in a see-saw battle in the fourth.
Star could see the light at the end of the tunnel, leading 83-79 with 2 and a half minutes to go in regulation.
