Lyceum Pirates dedicate elims sweep to personal heroes

MANILA, Philippines – More than completing a perfect elimination round campaign and earning an outright finals berth, the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates had a deeper motivation when they played defending champion San Beda College on Thursday afternoon.

With virtually every Lyceum player contributing, the Pirates hacked out a difficult 107-105 victory over the Red Lions in double-overtime, giving them a perfect 18-0 record at the end of the elimination round of NCAA Season 93.

That also sent them straight to the best-of-three finals, where they now await the survivor of the stepladder semifinals. San Beda, the No. 1 seed for the past 11 NCAA seasons, settled for the second seed.

Lyceum had chances to win the game in regulation, but head coach Topex Robinson kept them at an even keel in the extra periods by reminding them of their battle cry all season long.

"We just told them that the more minutes that we stay on the floor, the more people we will inspire," said Robinson, who has repeatedly stressed that as much as they want to win, they also want to serve as inspiration to the people who watch their games.
