Former Finalist Del Potro Battles Through Opener

The 2013 Shanghai Rolex Masters finalist got off to a good start in his campaign to make another deep run, as Juan Martin del Potro battled past a tough Nikoloz Basilashvili, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in just under two hours.

After a 23-minute opening set, it appeared that the No. 16 seed would have few problems with the Georgian qualifier. But that turned around quickly, and as the Argentine served at 4-4 in the third set, it was Basilashvili who had four break points to serve for the match.

Juan Martin del Potro and NextGenATP Korean Hyeon Chung advance on Monday at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China.
But del Potro managed to stave off each of his opponent’s opportunities, and after missing out on two match points in the next game, he converted on his third to clinch the victory.

Del Potro set up a tantalising second-round encounter with one of the sport’s rising stars in #NextGenATP Russian Andrey Rublev, who further cemented his standing in the Emirates ATP Race To Milan with a back-and-forth 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over St. Petersburg champion Damir Dzumhur.

Rublev also appeared to be in control after a 27-minute opening set in which he saved all three break points against him. But the Bosnian broke in the 19 year old’s first two service games in the second set to sprint to a 4-0 lead, which he would hold onto to force a decider.

Rublev, who is at a career-high No. 35 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, turned the tables once again in the final set, losing just four points on serve in the final set to advance. His meeting with del Potro will be their first.

China's own, wild card Di Wu, won his first tour-level match of the season by defeating Jeremy Chardy, 7-6(2), 6-2. His victory was just the second at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level during his career, with the other win coming in Shanghai last year in a third-set tie-break against Pablo Cuevas.

Singles players shone on the doubles court Monday, with Nick Kyrgios and Lucas Pouille upsetting this year's Monte Carlo winners Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. The pairings of Kevin Anderson and Nenad Zimonjic as well as Marcelo Demoliner and Fabio Fognini advanced.
