Dimitrov To Meet Del Potro In Beijing Second Round
Grigor Dimitrov opened his campaign on Tuesday at the China Open with a battling 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur, the recent St. Petersburg Open titlist, in one hour and 54 minutes.
Dimitrov, who is currently No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, added 35 points with the first-round win as he continued his bid to qualify for the first time to the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 12-19 November this year.
Dimitrov will next look to overcome Argentinean wild card Juan Martin del Potro, who is making his tournament debut. Del Potro knocked out Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 7-6(4), 6-4 in their first meeting since 2011 Estoril.
"I think I'm fresh," said del Potro. "I just came from home, [so] I'm strong to play the tournament. To have Dimitrov in the second round is not easy for me. He's one of the favourites to win the tournament. It could be a quarter-final, semi-final or the final match. But tomorrow I have to be ready for the challenge."
Earlier in the day, Australian Nick Kyrgios struck 12 aces in breezing past Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-1, 6-2 in just 56 minutes for a second-round encounter against Germany’s Mischa Zverev.
#NextGenATP Russian Andrey Rublev, a quarter-finalist at the US Open, kept up his high level of play, coming back from a set down to beat Jack Sock of the U.S. 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in 89 minutes. The 19-year-old Rublev won four of his six break points in the final two sets. Sock, meanwhile, lost all four break points faced in the second set and didn't see another opportunity in the decider.
Rublev will meet seventh seed and 2011 champion Tomas Berdych, who won almost 80 per cent of his first-serve points to advance past #NextGenATP American Jared Donaldson 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. Berdych beat Rublev in their lone prior FedEx ATP Head2Head series match-up, a 6-3, 6-2 win earlier this year in Miami.
