Del Potro Clings To London Hopes, Advances To SFs
While at times it looked as if Juan Martin del Potro was in trouble, the Argentine continued his last-ditch effort to climb the Emirates ATP Race To London standings with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Viktor Troicki, advancing to his second semi-final at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
After failing to convert on two immediate break points, del Potro would eventually drop the first set to the Serbian, who took advantage of his first and only opportunity of the set at 3-3. But del Potro quickly stormed to a 3-0 lead in the second set and would not give the advantage back, evening the match after 72 minutes.
It was at 2-2 in the decider that del Potro faced a scary moment. At 15-15, the 29 year old attempted to run around his backhand to hit a forehand when he tripped and fell on his surgically-repaired left wrist, needing to sit and talk to a trainer for several minutes. But when play resumed, he won three of the next four points to break serve and would not look back from there, running his record against Troicki to 7-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.
In his post-match press conference, del Potro said that he would go to a local hospital to get an MRI on his wrist.
"I'm glad to reach semi-finals in this tournament, but to be honest now, as I say always, the health is the first of all of my life, and I have been dealing with all my injuries in the past, and now it's time to take care of my body, see what the MRI say or what the doctor says," del Potro said. "But if nothing dangerous happened, I will be here for play tomorrow and doing my best."
Del Potro arrived in Shanghai at No. 25 in the Race, but his strong efforts have maintained his hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals. With the win against Troicki, he has earned 360 points so far this week, and could move up to No. 11 in the Race if he goes on to win the tournament.
Del Potro, who will return to the Top 20 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday for the first time since 6 October 2014, will next face No. 2 seed Roger Federer.
Federer takes a 16-6 lead over del Potro in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series into the match. The Argentine won their last tilt in the quarter-final of the US Open in September.
