Cone wanted Ginebra to call timeout but there was one problem
Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone acknowledged that his team could have set up a play had his players called timeout in the final, frantic seconds of Game 4 of the PBA Governors' Cup on Friday.
Trailing by 2 points with about 13 seconds remaining, the Kings had a chance to win the game outright or force overtime.
But everything went haywire for Ginebra as Cone and his crew missed all four field-goal attempts, including two at close range by Justin Brownlee, giving Meralco an 85-83 win and enabling the Bolts to tie the best-of-7 series at 2-2.
“Yeah we're trying to call for a timeout,” Cone said following the loss. “That's the problem with the league rules, coaches cannot call a timeout (in that stage of the game).
“Because the crowd goes crazy, they (players) can't hear you yelling and only the guy with the ball can call a time out. The guy can't hear us, he was looking down, the whole bench was calling a time out.”
Brownlee could've eliminated Cone's post-game what-ifs had he made the runner or the subsequent follow-up as time wound down.
