Alapag confident controversial import to be embraced by Pinoy fans
MANILA, Philippines — Alab Pilipinas head coach Jimmy Alapag does not anticipate any problems when controversial import Ivan Johnson suits up for the team in the ASEAN Basketball League starting in November.
Johnson, a former NBA player, introduced himself to Philippine basketball fans by helping TNT KaTropa win the 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Despite this, he was banned for life by PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa in 2016, when he was accused of disrespecting the top PBA official during a game against the Meralco Bolts. His punishment was eventually downgraded to a season-long ban.
This incident, however, did not deter Alab from tapping Johnson as one of its two World Imports for the upcoming season.
“No problems at all. I don't expect any issues,” Alapag told reporters on Tuesday in a press conference ahead of their campaign.
