After winning 20th title, why Cone can’t wait to talk to pal Erik Spoelstra

Barangay Ginebra’s successful PBA Governors’ Cup title defense against Meralco is Tim Cone’s 20th championship, but that's not exactly why the winningest coach in league history was all smiles on Friday.

“Look at this crowd. This is absolutely grabe! Amazing! That's what makes it so special, to be able to do it in front of these fans, even the Meralco fans. It's such a special thing to be able to do this,” he said, addressing those who attended the game in record number.

“I can't wait to see Erik Spoelstra and tell him I've coached in front of 50,000 people. It's gonna be so cool to say that to him,” added Cone, who is friends with the Miami Heat head coach.

According to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon, this was Cone’s eighth Governors’ Cup title; no other head coach has won it more than twice.

“We hit our shots all night,” Cone said. “LA (Tenerio) hit shots, Justin (Brownlee) hit shots, Greg (Slaughter) got big rebounds. It was a total team effort, we were just so pumped up from the crowd for 48 minutes and gave us a chance to win.”
