With Lyceum looming, San Beda warned against complacency

MANILA, Philippines – San Beda College head coach Boyet Fernandez already has October 19 marked in his calendar, even though the Red Lions still have three more playdates to go before they get there.

That is the day that the defending champions face off against the league-leading Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Pirates, the only team so far to defeat the Red Lions in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament.

"We have to take care of ourselves, because we have to play LPU on October 19," Fernandez said on Thursday, after San Beda completed an 83-72 win over Arellano University that assured them of a twice-to-beat bonus in the Final 4.

"That will be a crucial game," he said. "So we just have to be ready. All the games that we have right now is more of preparation for LPU. And as we all know, LPU is really doing great."

Indeed, Lyceum is the only team in the NCAA more impressive than San Beda. The Pirates, cellar-dwellers for the past half a decade, have a pristine 14-0 win-loss record. Anchored by CJ Perez, Mike Nzeusseu, and twins Jaycee and Jayvee Marcelino, Lyceum has hurdled all obstacles placed in front of them so far.
