Still unbeaten Lyceum braces for tougher challenges
MANILA, Philippines – The Lyceum of the University Philippines Pirates made history for their school once more on Tuesday, holding off the Mapua University Cardinals, 96-90, for their 10th win in a row in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament.
At 10-0, the Pirates are the only unbeaten team left in the league. It is already their best mark ever since joining the NCAA six years ago, and the best start by any team since powerhouse San Beda College went unbeaten in Season 86.
With every victory, however, the road only gets tougher for Lyceum.
Take their win against Mapua on Tuesday, for instance. Just two weeks ago, the Pirates crushed the same Cardinals team, 97-74, to complete a first round sweep. Yet they were never able to pull away from Mapua when they met anew, and the Cardinals even led at the end of the opening frame.
Lyceum coach Topex Robinson was not surprised that his team had a tough time against the Intramuros-based squad, which entered the game with a 1-8 record.
