Pliskova powers past Linette in Tokyo
TOKYO, Japan - No.2 seed Karolina Pliskova powered past Magda Linette and into the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Wednesday, triumphing 6-2, 6-1.
"I felt great today on the court," said Pliskova after the match. "I think my serve was working well...I'm really happy with my win today."
In seven career meetings, Linette owns just one career win against Pliskova from 2012, and could not improve on that record in Tokyo as her opponent put on a strong display.
Added Pliskova: "I know her game, and I felt confident against her. I got a lot of free points on serve and on the return, so I think it was a good start."
Playing her first match since losing the World No.1 ranking at the conclusion of the US Open, Pliskova was sharp for the duration and never faced a break point in the match.
"The ranking is not really my goal. To end the year at No.1 would be great...as I was there already," she said. "If you play well, you can go up in the rankings. It would be nice to end the year like this."
Though the No.2 seed got the early break in the first set, the Pole kept fighting, but did not have enough to hold Pliskova at bay for too long.
The Czech broke serve again in the second game of the second set, indicating her intent, and later added insurance to give herself the opportunity to serve out the match.
A wayward Linette forehand was enough to hand Pliskova the win on her first match point.
Earlier in the day, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat China's Wang Qiang 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and awaits the winner of Thursday's match between No.4 seed Johanna Konta and Barbora Strycova to round out the bottom quarter.
