NU bounces back, fends off gutsy UST for second win
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) National University (NU) weathered a career-performance from University of Santo Tomas' (UST) Regie Basibas to power past the Growling Tigers, 94-84, for its second win in the UAAP Season 80 tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Basibas was unstoppable through the first three frames, but the Bulldogs tightened up their defense in the payoff period to finally pull away from the gutsy Growling Tigers.
With the win, the Bulldogs recovered from a painful loss to De La Salle University in their previous contest, and improved their record to 2-1. Meanwhile, the Growling Tigers dropped to 0-3 in the tournament.
Issa Gaye led the way for NU with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks, and shut down the paint for the Bulldogs late in the game. Dave Yu scored 13 points on just eight shots, and skipper J-Jay Alejandro had an all-around effort of 12 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.
"Coming into the game, I really felt that it was going to be a hard-fought game because UST is 0-2," said NU coach Jamike Jarin. "We knew that coach Boy Sablan and his coaching staff, together with his boys, we knew they will come out slugging and play their best."
