Mapua snaps 11-game skid, downs CSB for 2nd win
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Mapua University ended its 11-game losing streak in style, turning back De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB), 79-69, for only its second victory of the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
A strong finishing kick anchored by Laurenz Victoria allowed the Cardinals to overhaul a 65-68 deficit, while their defense held the Blazers scoreless in the final three minutes and 23 seconds of the game.
With the victory, Mapua improved to 2-12, although they have already been eliminated from Final 4 contention.
The loss also ensured that CSB (3-11) is out of the running for a semifinals spot.
"What can I say, it's been a long time," Mapua coach Atoy Co said after the game. "Basta, we keep on practicing, and we still do our system. We run, kasi 'yun ang sistema namin. We are small, so we run."
