Lady Eagles torch Lady Stags in straight sets

Ateneo de Manila University saw the return of a couple of its injured players in its second straight win at the expense of the hapless San Sebastian College, 25-11, 25-13, 25-13, Saturday in Group A of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Jho Maraguinot got back into action after skipping the Lady Eagles’ last match because of a foot injury while Ana Gopico, who was nursing a lingering hamstring injury, was fielded for the first time together with rookie setter Dani Ravena in Ateneo’s cakewalk victory.

The Katipunan-based squad improved its record to 3-1 and moved closer to a semifinals berth.

Sophomore Jules Samonte scored 12 points while skipper Bea De Leon and Kat Tolentino finished with nine points each for the Lady Eagles, who eliminated the Lady Stags in the semis contention.

Maraguinot delivered eight points while Gopico, who came in as a reserve in the second set and a starter in the third frame, debuted with four markers for Ateneo. Maraguinot had 10 digs and six excellent receptions while Deanna Wong had 20 excellent sets and six points. Ravena played in the third in a relief role
