La Salle expects better, more versatile Mbala after Afro Basket

MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University big man Ben Mbala embarked on one of the most dominant campaigns in recent UAAP history in Season 79.

During the elimination round, where La Salle won 13 of 14 games, "Big Ben" averaged truly impressive numbers – 20.6 points on 54.68% shooting, on top of 16 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.4 blocks per game in 30.2 minutes of action per contest.

He was the runaway winner for Most Valuable Player honors, and later averaged 19.7 points and 13.7 rebounds in the Green Archers' three playoff games.

But other UAAP teams be warned – Mbala might be even better in Season 80. Or at least, he will be once he returns from his tour of duty with the Cameroon national basketball team in the 2017 Afro Basket tournament in Tunisia.

"Si Ben, we always tell him to do new things, kasi 'yung bata, grabe ang work ethic," said La Salle coach Aldin Ayo, who has been monitoring Mbala's performances in the regional tournament.
