In return to spotlight, UAAP greats hope their stories inspire others

As the UAAP opened its 80th season, the league paid tribute to past heroes hoping they can inspire the future.

And so host school Far Eastern University opened the festivities at Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday by parading the “greats” and cheering on the new generation of athletes to “Go for Great.”

Among the greats who represented their respective schools were Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez and Rico Villanueva; NU’s Danny Ildefonso, Ray Parks and Christine Patrimonio; UP’s Ronnie Magsanoc, Joe Lipa, and former varsity volleyball player Congreswoman Pia Cayetano; FEU’s Glenn Capacio, Terrence Romeo and Rachel Anne Daquis; UST’s Aric del Rosario, Dylan Ababou and Cyrus Baguio; UE’s Tisha Abundo; Adamson’s Queeny Sabobo, and Ana Santiago; and DLSU’s Renren Ritualo and Marielle Benitez.

“It’s a great privilege to be part of a selected few dahil all we wanted was to study and play and we got rewarded,” Magsanoc said. “(Us appearing here) is a way of saying thanks to the school. Until now, we’re still big UAAP fans.”

Cayetano cited sports as invaluable for athletes to improve their lives.
