Heartbreaking loss to UP to fire up UST
MANILA, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers bared their fangs during UAAP Season 80's opening weekend, nearly claiming an upset win despite being considered a rebuilding team by most pundits.
Behind a strong effort from third-year guard Marvin Lee and an impressive debut from Steve Akomo, the Growling Tigers gave University of the Philippines (UP) a fright. They were five seconds away from pulling off a massive upset, with Lee knocking down two charities to put them on top 73-71.
However, UP hacked out the win, thanks to a game-winning three-pointer from Paul Desiderio. Afterward, UP head coach Bo Perasol could not help but laud the Growling Tigers, and warned other UAAP teams from underestimating them.
Lee, who scored a game-high 20 points, believes their strong performance in their first game bodes well for the Tigers campaign in Season 80.
"Para sa amin, magandang experience 'yung nangyari," he said. "Magiging motivation na lang namin ito siguro."
