Coach hopes UST can build on brave effort against Ateneo
MANILA, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers lost for the fifth consecutive game on Wednesday, and remained winless in the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament.
But one would think that this was not the case after seeing UST coach Boy Sablan exit the UST dugout at the Araneta Coliseum with his head held high and his arms outstretched, as if in victory.
Sablan's reaction makes sense, given how his Tigers fought valiantly against the league-leading Ateneo Blue Eagles on Wednesday. From down 22 in the third quarter, UST managed to trim the lead to just one point, 80-81, early in the fourth before falling apart in the end because of turnovers and missed free throws.
"Nakahabol!" Sablan beamed. "(From) 22 points, not like before… That team last year, kung ganoon, wala na, 'di ba?"
Sablan was referring to his woeful Season 79 squad, a team that won only three games and lost in historic fashion – including a 43-point demolition at the hands of eventual champion De La Salle University in the second round.
