Barty bounces Radwanska from Wuhan, reaches last eight

WUHAN, China - Unseeded Ashleigh Barty became the first through to the last eight at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open on Wednesday as the Australian rallied past No.9 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.

After securing her second Top 10 win of the season against Johanna Konta in the second round, Barty came from a set down to reach her fifth quarterfinal of the year, and used a decisive break in the fifth game of the final set to help claim victory.

Unseeded Ashleigh Barty scored her second victory over a seeded player to reach the quarterfinals at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open on Wednesday.
"It was a big match for me, as she's not a style of player that I'm comfortable playing against," Barty said. "It was really nice to come through and play a consistent match. To be able to switch the momentum pretty quickly in the second was really good, and I'm really pleased."

Though the World No.37 has enjoyed a breakout 2017 season, her biggest quarterfinal of the season did not come easily. The Australian stroked a staggering 40 winners to Radwanska's 12 over the course of the nearly two-hour encounter, winning six of the 11 break points she created to reach the last eight at a Premier 5 event for the first time this season.

In the first career meeting between the two players, Barty led by an early break in the opening set, as three of the first four games went her way - including a lengthy six-deuce game on serve which helped her consolidate an early break to lead 3-1.

However, Radwanska mounted a comeback from there, winning nine of the next 10 points to cement a 4-3 advantage, and emphatically claimed her second break of the match to build a one-set lead.

Undunated by the turn of events, Barty's all-court tennis sone through in the second set, as three breaks of serves and pair of love holds ensured she would at least force a decider.

Though Radwanska improved her first-serve percentage from 53% to 72% in the second set, Barty found her groove on return in response, winning a staggering 67% of points in the Pole's service games to level the match.

After the pair traded breaks to begin the decider, Barty began to move towards the finish line as she snagged a second break of the set in the fifth game.

Though Radwanska twice got to deuce on the 21-year-old's serve from there, she was never again able to create a break point to get the decider back on serve, as Barty sealed victory on her fourth match point.

Barty will face Karolina Pliskova for a spot in the semifinals of the Premier 5 event, after the Czech rolled past China's Wang Qiang in under 50 minutes in her third round match.

"It's nice to get that consistent tennis match after match," the World No.37 said of her run this week. "I think I've played three quality opponents, and all of them it could've been a very different result. It's nice to get on a bit of a roll and hopefully I can play well tomorrow."
