Zverev Dodges Inspired Thompson In Washington
Fifth seed Alexander Zverev came out on top in a marathon match against Jordan Thompson on Wednesday at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., thwarting the Aussie’s upset bid by prevailing 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) to reach the third round.
“I tried to stay calm, stay composed and just focus on me,” said Zverev. “He’s obviously playing very well now. He just played a Challenger final. He's had a lot of matches on the hard courts already and I haven't played on hard courts since [this past March in] Miami, so I'm happy to be through and get that win.”
Zverev, who recently added former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero to his team, will take on Tennys Sandgren in the next round. Sandgren advanced after 10th seed Nick Kyrgios, troubled by a shoulder injury, retired with the American leading 6-3, 3-0. Sandgren is in top form at the moment, winning his first ATP World Tour main draw match on Tuesday night over Go Soeda.
Indian qualifier Yuki Bhambri recorded the upset of the night by defeating sixth seed and defending champion Gael Monfils 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The 25 year old, currently No. 200 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, hadn’t won two main draw matches at an ATP World Tour event since his quarter-final appearance in Chennai in January 2014. Next up for Bhambri is Guido Pella, a winner on Tuesday over 12th seed Mischa Zverev.
“It’s definitely one of the biggest wins of my career. You play for these moments,” said Bhambri. "I tried to stay competitive and focused in all my service games. I hung in there at the end and just fought my way through. It gives me a lot of confidence for my next round.”
Fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov followed the three-set trend on Wednesday by defeating Kyle Edmund 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Dimitrov scored the lone break of the final set at 4-3 to eventually advance in two hours and 21 minutes.
Standing between Dimitrov and a place in the quarter-finals is #NextGenATP Russian Daniil Medvedev, who advanced well after midnight over 14th seed Steve Johnson 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1).
Kevin Anderson, the 15th seed, didn’t drop serve in defeating Malek Jaziri 6-4, 6-1. The big-serving South African faces top seed Dominic Thiem in a third round clash on Thursday.
