Wozniacki eases past Barty into Cincinnati quarterfinals

CINCINNATI, OH, USA - No.6 seed Caroline Wozniacki stopped the impressive run of 21-year-old qualifier Ashleigh Barty at the Western & Southern Open on Thursday, winning 6-4, 6-2, and advancing to the quarterfinals in Cincinnati for the fourth time in her career.

Both players came into this match in strong form, as evidenced by their recent rises in the WTA Tour rankings. At this event, Barty matched her performance last week at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, where she also reached the third round as a qualifier, while Wozniacki is coming off a run to her sixth WTA final of the year in Canada.

World No.5 Caroline Wozniacki defeats Australian qualifier Ashleigh Barty in their first WTA encounter.
It was Barty who grabbed the initiative first, as she had no trouble on her first two service games and then went up a break when Wozniacki double faulted to hand the Australian a 3-1 lead. However, the No.6 seed broke straight back when Barty punched a backhand into the net as the windy conditions intensified.

The set pivoted at that point, as Wozniacki held at love, then went up a break as more unforced errors came off of Barty’s forehand.

Solid serving by the Australian helped to erase two set points at 5-3, and stopped the run of games by Wozniacki at four, but in the next game, a Barty backhand off the top of the net stayed on her side, and the Dane converted her third set point to take a 6-4 lead.

Both players cleaned up their games for the majority of the second set, as the wind continued to play a significant factor in the match.  Barty never quite regained the stellar form she displayed in the previous round, when she toppled No.9 seed Venus Williams for her first Top 10 victory.

Wozniacki quickly broke Barty at love to open the second set, and after five consecutive holds by the players, Barty sunk a forehand into the net and increased Wozniacki’s lead to two breaks.

Wozniacki’s ease on serve in the final set continued at 5-2, and she served out the match at love.

The 27-year-old Wozniacki , a two-time US Open finalist, has now reached the quarterfinals at the Western & Southern Open for the first time since 2014.

She’ll take on either World No.1 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic or Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi tomorrow.
