Stats Corner: Behind the Numbers at the US Open

NEW YORK, NY, USA - When was the last time there were 23 Americans in the main draw of a Slam? How does Venus Williams continue to set Open Era records? Who has the best hardcourt record going into the last hardcourt Slam?

WTA Insider and the WTA Stats & Information crew go deep into the numbers before the final Slam of the season kicks off on Monday at the US Open:

A record number of Americans lead a diverse US Open field, with 34 different countries represented, 12 teenage phenoms, and 8 women gunning for the No.1 ranking. WTA Insider digs into the numbers.
23 - Americans in the main draw at the 2017 US Open, the most at any Slam since the 2005 US Open.

34 - Countries represented in the main draw, led by the USA (23), Russia (11), Czech Republic (9), and Germany (9).

76 - Slam appearances for Venus Williams (including the 2017 US Open), an Open Era record. The American is 18-0 in first round matches at the US Open.

56 - Consecutive main draw appearances for former No.1 Jelena Jankovic, a streak that dates back to the Australian Open. It is the longest active streak. The record is 62-straight, held by Ai Sugiyama.

10 - Qualifiers who will be making their Slam main draw debut this year.

12 - Teenagers in the main draw this year.

3 - 17-year-olds are in the draw: Kayla Day, Claire Liu, and Sofia Zhuk. Day (US Open) and Liu (Wimbledon) are reigning junior Slam champions, Zhuk won junior Wimbledon in 2015.

8 - Players who can leave the US Open with the No.1 singles ranking. For more on that, read here.

46 - Women who have won at least one Slam title in the Open Era.

23 - Women who have reached the No.1 ranking.

48 - Match wins for No.5 Caroline Wozniacki in 2017. She leads the tour, with No.4 Elina Svitolina behind her with 45 wins.

29 - Hardcourt wins for Wozniacki in 2017 (29-8), which leads the tour, followed by No.1 Karolina Pliskova (28-6) and Svitolina (26-5).

5 - Players who played all four weeks of the US Open Series: Alize Cornet, Lauren Davis, Kristina Mladenovic, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Lesia Tsurenko.

3 - Players tied for the most hardcourt wins over the summer: No.2 Simona Halep (9-3), No.3 Garbiñe Muguruza (9-2), No.40 Ekaterina Makarova (9-2).

2 - Players who made semifinals or better at the two Premier 5 events over the summer in Toronto and Cincinnati: Halep (Toronto SF, Cincinnati F) and Sloane Stephens (Toronto SF, Cincinnati SF).

15 - Three-set matches won by Muguruza and Wozniacki this season, tied for the most on tour.

10 - Consecutive quarterfinals made by Halep. Her last loss before the quarterfinal stage came in Indian Wells in March.

0 - Wins over Top 20 opposition in 2017 for defending champion Angelique Kerber (0-9). Kerber was 24-9 vs. Top 20 opposition last year.

2 - Times Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced past the Round of 16 at the US Open (14 appearances). She won the tournament in 2004 and finished runner-up to Justine Henin in 2007.

1 - Hardcourt match played by Maria Sharapova in 2017. Sharapova beat Jennifer Brady 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in the first round at Stanford.

15 - Combined match wins for Venus at the three Slams this year. Venus has played eight WTA events this year and has won 14 matches.

348 - Aces hit by Pliskova heading into the US Open. She leads the tour, with Germany's Julia Goerges trailing her with 340.

15 - Wins over Top 10 opponents by Svitolina over the last two seasons, leading the tour over that span. She is a tour-best 7-1 vs. Top 5 opponents this season.

3 - Consecutive losses for French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko coming into the US Open.

301 - Rankings spots jumped by 18-year-old No.67 Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic over the last 12 months, the biggest jump of anyone during that span.

11 - Tiebreak sets played by Venus this season. She has won 10 of them (10-1).

1 - Player who has won Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season since 2003 (Serena Williams, 2012). Muguruza is bidding to add her name to that list.

17 - Consecutive Slams that has featured a first-time semifinalist.

11 - Times the Slams have been won by four different women in a year in the Open Era. It happened most recently in 2014.
