Standhardinger on his way to KL to beef up Gilas
KUALA LUMPUR — Fresh off an impressive stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut, Filipino-German big man Christian Standhardinger is set to see action for the national team anew — this time, in the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.
Standhardinger is already in Manila, according to coach Jong Uichico, and he will leave for Kuala Lumpur on Saturday in time to join Gilas Pilipinas ahead of its game against Thailand on Sunday.
"He'll be in shape. I hope he's fresh, but he'll be in shape," said Uichico.
Standhardinger's presence will be a massive boost for a Gilas team that may wind up lacking an inside presence against some of the tougher teams in the tournament. With Standhardinger in the fold, Gilas has another bruising forward who can battle for rebounds, finish through contact, and set screens for their guards.
His long trip, from Beirut to Manila then to Kuala Lumpur, does concern the coaching staff a bit.
