Pia Cayetano on SEA Games volleyball gold: 'Maybe another time'

KUALA LUMPUR — Congresswoman Pia Cayetano took a lead role in consoling the Philippine women's volleyball team after its disheartening loss to powerhouse Thailand in the semifinals of the 29th Southeast Asian Games at MiTEC's Hall 11 here.

Cayetano, representative of the second district of Taguig City-Pateros, watched the game with her brother, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, and saw how the Filipinas fell short against a talented, veteran-laden Thailand squad, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17.

Afterward, the former University of the Philippines volleybelle huddled the weary, emotional team and exhorted its effort against the Thais.

"I just told the girls na as a player, siyempre I also feel what they feel, and I know 'yung frustration nila," Cayetano said.

The former senator believes that the Filipinas' frustration is partly due to the realization that they could match up with the Thais. Indeed, in the opening set the Philippines was able to force a 19-all deadlock, only for the Thai veterans to step up and help their team pull away.
